“Mercy is not God’s afterthought. It is the first gift He places at the door of our need.”
The Critical Importance of Obtaining Mercy
Successfully obtaining mercy is so important that in Isaiah 59, God clearly said His hands are not short that He can’t save, nor His ears deaf that He can’t hear. Sin is what blocks access to Him for a person. The believer must never handle the prayer for mercy carelessly.
“What blocks us from God is never His unwillingness, but our unaddressed sin.”
Mercy: God’s Initiative
There’s something profound I keep seeing in scripture. Mercy is always God’s initiative, never man’s. Before we ever needed it, God already made provision for it. When we come to the throne of grace, we are not surprising God. We are stepping into a provision He has already prepared.
“God’s solution is always waiting before our problem even appears.”
The Boldness of the Broken
We come boldly to the throne of grace not because we are qualified, but because we trust there is a solution awaiting us. He is faithful and just to forgive us.
Think of boldness like a sick person being rushed to the hospital. Even if the person is near death, the driver heads straight for the hospital, certain that help is waiting. Human doctors may sometimes fall short, but God never falls short. At His throne of grace, the expertise, the cure, and the solution are always present, waiting for us when we come with a contrite heart and trust in His promise to be merciful.
“Our boldness is not arrogance. It is confidence in God’s mercy and His promise to heal.”
Steps to Obtaining Mercy
To truly obtain mercy, a few things must be in place:
- Honestly acknowledge that you have sinned.
- Admit that your sin was a deviation from God’s set standard.
- Agree that God is right about His standard. Otherwise, God would be called a liar in that matter.
- Take the bold step of coming to the throne room of grace to obtain mercy and find grace in time of need.
“Mercy is found at the intersection of honesty, humility, and faith in God’s promise.”
The Advocate and the Accuser
We are advised not to sin because it is possible for the Spirit-filled believer to live a life without sin. If it were not possible, the Bible would not have mentioned it. But if we do fall, there is an Advocate, a lawyer, who responds to our contrite heart and our acceptance of God’s verdict, delivering us from lawful captivity.
Christ is our Advocate, but Satan is the advocate of accusation. He uses the law to accuse us (see John 5:45). However you look at Satan, he has the legal right to appear in court to execute his role as the advocate of evil. Every accusation, every condemnation, is rooted in the law, but Christ’s advocacy is always stronger—He pleads mercy on our behalf.
“The accuser points to your record, but the Advocate points to the blood.”
The Spirit’s Supply for True Repentance
Here’s a deeper truth: Even the ability to feel broken and truly sorry for our sins comes from the Spirit. Zechariah 12:10 calls it “the spirit of grace and supplications.” When God pours out this Spirit, He helps us feel genuine sorrow—the kind that leads to real repentance. Paul described this in 2 Corinthians 7:10, “For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation not to be repented of.” When we come for mercy, God helps us do it rightly. Our claim for forgiveness is accepted because His Spirit has already prepared our hearts.
“God supplies the very brokenness He requires, so that our plea for mercy rings true.”
Persuading God for Our Allocation
Mercy is not something we invent or persuade God to create. It is a provision He put in place before we ever asked. What we do is persuade God to give us our allocation of His existing mercy, by agreeing with His verdict and the provisions He has made. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) The Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world, proving that mercy existed before sin ever showed up.
Every time we return, He is waiting with open arms. Let God be true. However, when mercy is abused there are dire consequences.
“Mercy is God’s answer waiting for your agreement with His truth.”
Sample Prayer for Mercy
Holy Spirit, your standard of righteousness is the true standard. I have ignored your voice again and strayed out of the way and sinned although you have made every provision for me not to sin. I accept your verdict on my actions in this court of prayer. I however plead the blood which is able to blot out this transgression and put it out of the way and nail it to the cross. I believe your finished work on the cross successfully handles this case. I obtain mercy and I am grateful for setting me free in Jesus name. Amen.
